Kelly Musler Hopes Her Upcoming LP Hiraeth Can be Used as a Tool For Healing

Texas-based indie artist Kelly Musler is releasing her new LP Hiraeth this Friday. We sat down and talked with her about toxic people and the process of healing that inspired this project.

What was the inspiration behind Hiraeth?

Hiraeth (pronounced he-rithe) is a Welsh word meaning "A longing for a home that you cannot return to, or never was" The entire album is about dealing with toxic people in your life, whether it's your partner, friend, or family member. We all know and have had to break free from a narcissist at one point and this album is about going through that and making it to the other side.

How long have you been working on this project?

Since August of last year.

How has Covid-19 affected Hiraeth?

Honestly, the lockdown has really helped me with completing my musical projects. My recording studio is in my home and I do all the work so being holed up for a year had at least one upside to it.

Who did you work with on this project?

I wrote, recorded, sang, and produced the entire album apart from the song "Fix Yourself". Corey Dee Williams (Billy Dee Williams' son) is featured on it and he adds the perfect amount of funk to it.

What are your favorite tracks off of the LP?

They're all super personal songs to me and I love them all, but "I'm Not You" just hits different for me.

What would you like your listeners to get out of this release?

I've always wanted to release music that helps people get through it. I always turn to music as a kind of therapy and it's always helped and healed me, and my biggest goal in life is to return that feeling for others.

What else can we expect from you in 2021?

2020 has taught me not to make any plans ever, so we'll just have to ride the wave and see where it takes us! Hopefully we'll get back to normal soon and I can play live.

Is there anything else you would like to share with your fans, listeners and our readers regarding this project?

I truly hope this album reaches the people that need it. I gutted myself writing these songs while going through something heartbreaking, but I also healed myself. I hope this album heals anyone else who needs it, too.

Hiraeth available on all major platforms this Friday, February 26th.
