Rachel Panchal is coming out with another great cover, this time taking on Ed Sheeran's "Afterglow". We sat down with Rachel to discuss how she took this song and made it her own.
What inspired you to do a cover of "Afterglow"?
Actually, I was with my husband and I heard it on Spotify and I just kept playing it over and over. There's certain songs where when I hear it, I have to listen to it over and over and "Afterglow" was one of them so I decided to cover it. Another thing that drew me to it was I like to do covers that I can put a different spin on it than the original was. For example, with "Afterglow" it's a male vocal so I can change the key, make it a female vocal and stay true to the original but make it different enough that it's offering something that's not already out there.
How long have you been working on this cover?
I think I started it the first week of February.
Has COVID-19 affected the progression of getting this single out?
Not really. I did the production myself and then I sent it to my friend to mix and master it so I was able to do it just from my home studio.
What would you like your listeners to get out of this cover?
I'm a vocalist as far as what instrument is my primary instrument so I really put a lot of lush harmonies in there, kind of created some dense chords vocally and I think the harmonies are really what make it unique and special. I want it to feel like easy listening, relaxing but also I want the beauty of the vocal to stand out.
What else can we expect from you this year?
Next I have an original song called "Fringe" that I co-wrote and co-produced with a friend. I have another song that I'm working on with him that I'm working on finishing. My goal is to release something every 6-8 weeks. I recently did an arrangement of "Amazing Grace (My Chains Are Gone)", not the Pentatonix version but still harmony driven, for my church. It's going to be their Easter special. I might just fully flesh that out and make it a cover I haven't decided.
Is there anything else you would like to share with your fans, listeners and our readers regarding "Afterglow"?
I really like it when I can go to another world when I'm listening to a song and I get caught up in it. I hope that this cover can do that and make people feel something but also that it could be a good soundtrack to whatever they're doing.
"Afterglow" available on all streaming platforms this Friday.
