The 15 year old singer/songwriter from New York City is kicking off 2021 with her new hit "Water". We sat down with Kayla to talk about leaving toxic relationships and how her personal experiences helped inspire this new track.
What was the inspiration behind "Water"?
I wrote this song about leaving a toxic relationship or someone that was taking advantage of you and having the strength to do it even though the emotions are really hard to deal with. Just being strong and just letting it go.
How long have you been working on this single?
I actually came up with it last year, sometime around the summer of 2020. I've been through a lot of situations like this, so I take stuff from my own experience and also twist it around in my head a little more. But I've definitely been through a lot of stuff to know about it more. I actually had just gotten out of one of those [situations], so I thought it was perfect. I went to record it around July. I've had it for awhile now and it's finally becoming real, so that's nice.
Has COVID-19 affected the progression of this project at all?
It didn't because I did all of the work mostly at home, coming up with the song and everything. I went to the studio and it was fine, you just had to wear your mask and it didn't really stop me from actually going in and making it become something.
Did you work with anyone else on this single?
I just worked with a producer at Platinum Recordings Sound Studios. He just helped me put it together.
What would you like your listeners and your fans to get out of this single?
Honestly, since it's really relatable, I just want people to understand where I'm coming from and people who are going through the same thing really feel the song. It's something that a lot of teenagers go through.
What else can we expect from you in 2021?
I'm already working on another single and I have a few more. I'm not sure what I'm going to do with them yet but I would love to get them out as soon as possible. I might be doing an album by the end of the year. I have a lot of stuff in mind but I'm definitely working on a single right now.
Is there anything else you would like to share with your fans, listeners and our readers regarding "Water"?
I hope you like it and relate to it because that's what I would want for anyone to hear this [song].
"Water" releasing on all major streaming platforms this Friday.
